The Problem With Stories

Strange tales for a better world.

I’ve never been one for the mundane story.

That’s not to say that I only like stories that have dragons or alternate dimensions; I quite like classics like Pride and Prejudice, and popular stories like the Sherlock Holmes canon. But it is to say that I can’t stand stories where there are no interesting characters and there is no meaningful conflict.

I also don’t like run-of-the-mill stories. Show me something unusual; it doesn’t have to be flashy or detatched from reality; it just has to be different. That said, it helps if the material is fantasy or science-fiction, but not always (see all the Tolkien copycats in the fantasy market, although it seems to be less of a problem these days).

And, once in a while, I’d like the events of a story to eventually make the world a better place. Whether it’s solving a murder, rescuing a town from imminent destruction, or even Saving the World, somehow, actions should reverberate and matter to people outside of just the main character.

If you’ve ever read a slush pile, you know you run into an awful lot of stories that fail at least one of these three principles, and a disturbing number that fail all three.

Striving for Excellence

We strive to give you quality here. Which does mean that updates to this site will not be aggressive, as stories and episodes go through beta readers and a couple drafts before hitting you in the eye. That said, hopefully updates will also be more complete, rather than just drop-kicking the reader every 500 words.

(We reserve the right to continue drop-kicking the reader every 2000 words, though.)
